What drives the price of a horse?
- Training and record. A horse competing successfully in its discipline costs far more than the same horse green.
- Age. Prices usually peak between 7 and 12 — schooled, sound and with years of work left.
- Breeding. Imported warmblood lines carry a premium over local crossbreds and Boerperds.
- Soundness and vetting. A clean recent vet report supports the asking price; known issues discount it.
- Location. Gauteng and the Western Cape have deeper competition markets and firmer prices; rural listings are often cheaper but add transport cost.
- Temperament. Genuinely safe, novice-friendly horses hold their value regardless of breeding.
The cost after purchase
The purchase price is the smaller half of the decision. Budget separately for livery or grazing, feed and supplements, farrier visits roughly every six to eight weeks, annual vaccinations and dentistry, tack, insurance, and transport. Ongoing costs vary widely by province and yard, so ask the seller what the horse currently costs to keep — a straight answer is a good sign.
